Solving Word problems
We have to carefully read the given
word problem. Understand what is given
and what is asked.
In Addition Word problems, write the given
verbal statements one below the other in words
with the numerical values given for them.
Write the word statement for the value to be
found and equate it to the sum of the values
given as per the given word problem.
The following example will clarify the method.
Example of Addition Word problem
Problem :
In a city there are 393560 men,
401020 women and 80289 children.
What is the population of the
city in figures and words.
Solution :
Men in the city = 393560
Women in the city = 401020
Children in the city = 80289

Thus,
Population of the city in figures = 874,869.

Exercise on Addition Word problems
In the following problems, give your
answers both in figures and in words.
- On the right side of a road, there are
437 trees and on the left there are 395 trees.
What is the total number of trees.
- A's house is 398 metres to the right of B's house
and C's house is 487 metres to the left of B's
house. What is the distance between A's house
and C's house.
- In a school there are 109 eucalyptus
trees, 67 mango trees and 9 guava trees.
How many trees are there in all ?
- Make the greatest and least numbers
with the digits 1,7, 9, 4. Find their sum.
- A shool exhibition was held for four days.
The number of students who visited the
exhibition on different days was
367, 1934, 298, 1296.
How many students visited the exhibition.
- A soap factory produced 10939, 11056, 11198,
10987 soap cakes on four different days.
How many soap cakes were produced during
these four days.
- A country exported 123978, 114560, 102985,
129869 tonnes of tea during four different
years. How much tea was exported during
these four years.
- The population of four cities are
1099367, 1139860, 1208765 and 1023456.
