         Learn/Teach
         Addition through Fun Games
         before Addition Word Problem

         For details, see near
         the bottom of this page.

         Please study
         Addition Method,
if you have not already done so.

There, we covered the process of adding any
digit numbers with examples and exercises.

That knowledge is a prerequisite here.

Here, we deal with Word problems.

        Solving Word problems

We have to carefully read the given
word problem. Understand what is given
         and what is asked.

In Addition Word problems, write the given
verbal statements one below the other in words
with the numerical values given for them.

Write the word statement for the value to be
found and equate it to the sum of the values
given as per the given word problem.

The following example will clarify the method.

        Example of Addition Word problem

         Problem :
In a city there are 393560 men,
         401020 women and 80289 children.
What is the population of the
         city in figures and words.

         Solution :

Men in the city = 393560
Women in the city = 401020
Children in the city = 80289
                                     1
                                  1
                                  ------
Population of the city = 874869
                                  ------

         Thus,
Population of the city in figures = 874,869. Ans.

Population of the city in words is
         Eight Lakhs Seventy Four Thousand
         Eight Hundred Sixty Nine
(in The Hindu - Arabic Number System )
or Eight Hundred Seventy Four Thousand
         Eight Hundred Sixty Nine
(in          The English Number System )
