Imagine an empty chocolate box.
How many chocolates are there
in the box ?
Suppose, a chocolate is added
to the box. Now, how many
chocolates are there in the box?
Keep on adding a chocolate and
each time you have to answer the
question, how many chocolates
are there in the box ?
To answer this, we need to have
a system for counting.
In the most popular system of
counting,
the answer to the question is
zero (symbol '0') for no
chocolates in the box,
one (symbol '1') when a
chocolate is added,
two (symbol '2') when an
additional chocolate is added,
three (symbol '3'), four
(symbol '4'), five (symbol '5'),
six (symbol '6'),seven
(symbol '7'), eight (symbol '8'),
nine (symbol '9'),
when an additional chocolate is
added each time, successively,
in an order.
These are the single digit
serial numbers.
After adding these nine
(symbol '9') chocolates, if one
more chocolate is added, the
answer is ten (denoted as '10').
This, most popular number
system is called the base-10
system (or decimal system),
as it uses ten symbols.
It is assumed to have originated
because humans have ten fingers.
The base-10 system (or decimal
Number system) is also called
The Hindu-Arabic Number System,
as it was developed by the
Hindus and Arabs many ceturies ago.
It is the one most commonly used
today throughout the world.
It has a set of symbols or
characters called digits,
which are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8 and 9, used to express
counting of quantities.
The symbols, names and the
order of these digits are
to be remembered.
You may consider this

as an introduction to the
Decimal Number System.

your answer in symbols and words.
- which is bigger, 6 or 8 ?
Answer : 8 (Eight)
- which is smaller 3 or 5 ?
Answer : 3 (Three)
- What is the next digit to 6 ?
Answer : 7 (Seven)
- How many digits are there
in between 4 and 9 ? Write them.
Answer : 4 (four)
(The in between digits are :
5,6,7,8).
- What is the digit before 6 ?
Answer : 5 (Five)
